Description

I post a lot of my strips from Montgrave up here, so I had something that I wanted to share with everybody. A little behind-the-scenes type piece.

Here we have a panel from the first strip I did over on the left, adjacent to a panel from the most recent strip I did over to the right. Hah, notice anything different about them?

The first strip was drawn on October 16th, 2008 and the current strip was drawn March 12th, 2009...which is almost exactly 5 months later. What you're looking at is only five months of progress.

I'm not writing this to brag about how awesome I am, but rather to inspire people who tend to get down on their art like I do. When I started Montgrave, I had never finished any comic strip that I deemed to be of "professional quality," nor had I done any concept sketches of what the characters were supposed to look like, nor did I have any idea of what the joke in the next strip was going to be. I just did it for the simple fact that I wanted to start a comic and figured that the rest of the pieces would fall into place eventually.

I've worked hard at it every day since then to get where I am now. It's not easy. There are days when I just flat out don't want to do the next strip. I'm too tired, too busy, too drunk off Wild Turkey, whatever. But the real trick here is just to START. Start today and don't stop. No matter how much you think it sucks. Just draw it. Because what's going to happen (I promise) is that in a few months you'll be able to look back at the beginning and you won't care that it sucked.

Actually, it'll seem funny. Somewhat novel that you didn't know how to draw your OWN characters. Just don't let yourself get hung up on details at the start. Nothing will ever happen until you put pen to paper, or in my case Stylus to Wacom Tablet.

So what are you waiting for? Go do something awesome.

I read Montgrave regularly. It's a great comic. I'm enjoying the current arc very much.

Keep up the good work.
